Assessment

Incorporate Peer Evaluation and Self Evaluation

Students are often uncertain about how they are perceived online, where there is no way to see and hear the reactions of others. Instructors often wonder if their responses to students are different from those of the other students in the class.

Peers are an untapped source of motivation. Peer evaluations of group assignments may constitute a percentage of the grade, or they may constitute feedback only. When counted as part of the grade, the actual scores may be used, or simply the action of completing the peer evaluation may be used. Peer evaluations provide team members with a confidential opportunity to offer praise or complaint about the work of team members.

Student self-evaluations are valuable to students and instructors. Reflections on your instruction and student learning can provide you with information that may improve your teaching: students may report barriers to learning or to understanding of assignments or content, and students can use the opportunity to integrate their own experiences with what they are learning.

Implement Peer Evaluating with peer2peer

Online Learning has also incorporated a peer evaluation tool into myCourses called peer2peer. This tool is a great feature added to the many other tools in myCourses and it incorporates well with the group feature of myCourses that can be created in the Classlist. For more information on peer2peer and how you can incorporate it into your own courses, please visit the Teaching Technologies page. This page will provide you information on how the tool works, instructions on how to incorporate it into your course, and best practices on how the use the tool effectively.
